Love is Love. Healing is Healing.
June is Pride Month – a celebration of LGBTQIA+ identity, visibility, and love. But it’s also an important time to talk about something that often goes unspoken in these spaces: mental health during pregnancy and postpartum.
At The Midwife Life, we believe in whole-person, whole-family care. That includes the emotional wellbeing of every parent, regardless of gender, sexuality, or family structure.
Too often, queer and trans parents are left out of the conversation when it comes to birth and mental health support. Systems of care have historically centered cisgender, heterosexual women, leaving many birthing people feeling unseen, unsafe, or misgendered in the most vulnerable moments of their lives.
That’s why this month, we’re re-sharing one of our most-listened-to podcast episodes:

Why This Episode Matters
This isn’t just an episode about postpartum depression or anxiety (although we talk about that too). It’s a reminder that:
- Mental health doesn’t discriminate, but access to care often does.
- Parenthood comes in many forms. Every version is valid and deserves to be supported.
- Inclusive care isn’t a trend. It’s a necessity for safer, healthier outcomes.
Whether you’re a queer parent navigating birth for the first time, a partner supporting someone through postpartum recovery, or a provider ready to do better, this episode offers both heart and strategy.
A Midwifery Model That Includes Everyone
In our birth centers, we use a midwifery model of care that prioritizes presence, autonomy, and relationship. We screen all pregnant and postpartum clients for mental health concerns, offer referrals to trusted providers, and center identity-affirming care from the first visit to the last postpartum check-in.
This isn’t just about doing the right thing – it’s about creating real safety. Because when people feel safe, they can heal.
This Pride Month, Let’s Ask Better Questions
🌈 Who is left out of your care model?
🌈 Are your intake forms inclusive of all identities?
🌈 Are your staff trained in trauma-informed, LGBTQIA+-affirming language and care?
🌈 Are you listening when queer and trans parents tell their stories?
Because love is love.
And care should reflect that.
